Highlighting our dedicated employees who bring both their experience and passions to Imagion Biosystems:
We sat down with Carmen Soikowski, who joined us as our Director of Operations in November 2021, to talk about her experience prior to joining Imagion Biosystems, her goals in her role, and what is motivating her work.
What experience do you bring prior to joining IBX?
I bring more than 25 years of cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) operation-focused experience in areas such as manufacturing, quality control, pilot plant tech transfer, supply chain, and warehousing experience across companies as small as 15 people to over 2500 people worldwide.
What drew you to join IBX?
My mother was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer and the work we are doing here at Imagion would have helped her significantly. She had several lymph nodes removed that were all, thankfully, negative however, her recovery from the incision was painful and extended. Had our product been available to her, she most likely would have been able to forego that surgery altogether.
In addition to the personal interest, the whole world of superparamagnetic nanoparticles is an interesting subject. In a previous company, we used magnetic particles to help capture a specific RNA sequence for an indicated target. I was/am curious to see how we can expand on the use of magnetic particles in diagnostic applications.
What are your main goals/challenges in your current role?
My initial goal is to help set up a cGMP manufacturing environment to allow us to manufacture the nanoparticles that are at the core of our business. At present, we do not have full cGMP capabilities, so the challenge is to design each sub-department within operations to achieve the business-appropriate phasing in of manufacturing. I’ll do this in collaboration with my quality counterparts, of course.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
At the risk of sounding “corny,” the team at Imagion is really terrific to work with. They are focused on their projects while still maintaining a “how can we partner to get this done” attitude. Each team member I have encountered has been welcoming, helpful, and very knowledgeable. I look forward to adding Operations expertise to the team.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my cats (I’m the “crazy” cat lady with 5 cats, presently!!). I do enjoy playing softball but the pandemic has interfered with that, among other things…
Anything else you would like to add?
For most of my professional life, I have been working with Chemists, Biologists, and Engineers. I am truly looking forward to adding Physicists to that list!
